The Capital City Kwanzaa Festival embodies the principles of the Kwanzaa holiday. It’s a year-end celebration featuring performances by Richmond's legendary Afro-Funk band, Plunky & Oneness, Reggae, Neo-soul and Hip Hop music.
The festival's theme this year is "Change... Through Empowerment". Join us in welcoming Iyanla Vanzant, inspirational speaker, author & spiritual life counselor -- featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Michael Baisden Show.
The community is invited to join in and be a part of the Drum Call & Processional and see the Elegba Folklore Society's exciting performers and stiltwalker! The Candlelighting Ceremony, capturing the spirit and significance of the Kwanzaa season, starts at 2pm.
Special children's activities led by Nubian Village Academy – Richmond’s premier African-centered private school – and celebrated Antigua-born artist Iyaba Ibo Mandingo will be held throughout the day, along with interactive workshops on self- improvement. The African Market provides an opportunity to browse eclectic merchandise and taste African-inspired cuisine.
